Castle of Montearag贸n (Huesca)
This Monday we go to Huesca where we can see the Castle of Montearag贸n. A medieval castle of the XII century that still retains much of its external structure.
CASTILLO de MONTEARAG脫N. Huesca
We visited quite a gem in the rough. We are talking about the Castle of Montearag贸n. This is in a state of rehabilitation and adaptation to visits. Even so, it can be visited within the “open doors” campaign.
🧐 It was built in 1086 commissioned by King Sancho Ram铆rez. Some time after he died, it was converted into an abbey. But his story does not end here.
LOCATED A TOP OF A hill and built in the 11th century, this Romanesque half castle and half abbey watch all over the city of Huesca and the surrounding areas.
It was designed by Sancho Ramirez, king of Arag贸n and Pamplona, to aid in the conquest of the city of Huesca from the moors, after the Reconquista.
The Castle of Montearag贸n lost its military function but remained an abbey for 750 years until Spanish confiscation in the 19th century.

Several restoration projects are taking place in order to preserve the remains of this ancient castle which is part of the history of Arag贸n.
