😍 Castellfollit de la Roca is a beautiful village located in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain.
It is one of the most picturesque villages in Catalonia and is situated between the Fluviá and Toronell rivers, suspended on a spectacular basaltic cliff.
The village is built on a basaltic cliff, called the cinglera de Castellfollit, which is about 50 meters high and about one kilometer long.
Village is composed of squares and narrow, shaded streets. At the end of the precipice, there is the Josep Pla viewpoint square, which offers an impressive panorama.
The church of Sant Salvador from the 13th century, the bell tower of Sant Roc, and especially the natural site of the village are its main assets.
Castellfollit de la Roca is one of the smallest municipalities in Spain with less than one square kilometer.
It is located near the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park.

How to Reach Besalú: From Barcelona, take the AP-7 motorway to Girona, followed by the C-66 via Banyoles and Besalú towards Olot.
Castellfollit is located on the N-260z approximately nine kilometres before Olot. The journey takes around an hours Teisa Bus from Girona to Castellfollit de la Roca ~5 Euros.
History of Castellfollit de la Roca
Hundreds of thousands of years ago, rivers of volcanic lava rushed through what is now Spain.
With time, they turned to rock and formed a crag over the abyss. Back in the Middle Ages, someone decided to build a village on that basaltic rock between the rivers Fluvia and Toronell.
They named it Castellfollit de la Roca, and this is one of the strangest places in the world.
You can see it from the distance, and from sunset till midnight, the cliffs are illuminated, making it look even more like a mysterious medieval castle.
The village is shorter than a mile and is made up of narrow shadowy streets and little squares that all blend into one main artery.
Most of the buildings here are made of the same material as the pedestal the village stands on – it’s all volcanic rocks.
The place is so tightly pressed it feels like one wrong step, and you’d fall into the abyss…
