LATEST UPDATE FROM SAN FULGENCIO COUNCIL 28th May 2024

The Government will require 📑 INSURANCE FOR ELECTRIC SCOOTERS 🛴 and their registration in the DGT in one year!!!

Yesterday, the Council of Ministers approved the modification of the vehicle insurance regulation in order to include, for the first time, the obligation to have liability insurance for owners of electric scooters. It will also be mandatory to register these type of vehicles before January 2, 2026 in the Spanish Traffic Department database (DGT)

– They can be used in pedestrian areas at pedestrian speed.

This is because it is classified as a power wheelchair. Therefore is not a means of transport, so They can not be used outside the city limits. It can not be used to travel between populations.

Please use these vehicles with responsibility, not for fun.

These personal mobility scooters were banned from All Renfe trains in December 2023.

After Barcelona, Madrid, and Mallorca, Andalucia has also implemented a ban on carrying these scooters on all public transport. This precautionary measure is temporary and aims to address safety concerns associated with the risk of electric scooter batteries catching fire.

The DGT has stated that from January 21,2024 Only certified electric scooters will be sold.

As of January 22 2024, electric scooters sold in Spain must possess a certification to legally operate on the streets.

  • This move by the DGT (Directorate-General for Traffic) aims to uphold minimum safety and quality standards. …
  • Their maximum speed is capped between 6 and 25 km/h

Certified brands and models

When purchasing a VMP, keep in mind that VMPs marketed after January 22, 2024 must be certified for use. VMPs marketed until January 21, 2024 may circulate until January 22, 2027 even if they do not have a certificate. From that date, only VMPs that have the certification will be able to do so.

The list of brands and models that currently have a VMP Certificate, according to the VMP characteristics manual published by Resolution of January 12, 2022, of the General Directorate of Traffic, is found in the link below.

Electric scooters

Out of interest I recently tried out one of the above Electric Scooters, they are certainly fairly fast and well made.

My first test run went well, second trial was a catastrophe, as I mounted it took off like a rocket couldn’t find brakes in time before I managed to come off, scooter not damaged but very nasty graze to my leg and a sprained wrist.

Perhaps I should consider that as I am now in my 80s that they are possible it bit to fast for me?

The shop assistant had told me it takes a while to get used to how they work.
