Gardening Spain tips tricks Mediterranean genuine need to know

Ideal for Lazy Gardeners

Most plants need specific watering schedules, special fertilisers, and constant attention.

But nasturtium, one of the first things I wanted to grow as a beginner gardener, requires none of that and actually thrives on a bit of neglect.

Native to South America, nasturtium was brought to Europe 500 years ago and now grows all over the world.

It makes a wonderful ground cover and stunning hanging plant. Beyond its good looks, it’s an edible salad green with a peppery kick that people either love or hate, and the flowers make the perfect edible salad topping.

At the end of your first season growing it, nasturtium will drop countless seeds that germinate when conditions are right.

If you want to start them for the first time, soak your seeds for a few hours (but not more than eight).

Then direct sow them about an inch deep and around 10 inches apart. I haven’t had to sow a single seed in years, and I couldn’t be happier when I see them show up.

Nasturtium is the ultimate set it and forget it garden plant. Low maintenance, self-seeding, edible, and beautiful. What more could you want from a plant? Have you tried growing nasturtium in your garden?

Sow nasturtium seeds directly outdoors in spring after the last frost, or indoors 4–6 weeks earlier, at a depth of 1.5cm (\(1/2\) inch) and 10–30cm apart. They thrive in full sun, poor-to-average soil, and require minimal fertiliser. Seeds germinate in 5–12 days and typically flower within 10 weeks.
