The town of Peniscola is where the the American movie El Cid (1961) was shot in Peniscola castle! Charlton Heston starred in it as El Cid, the legendary Spanish hero who took the initiative to drive Moors out of Spain.

The Castillo Palacio de Peñíscola, Castellón, Valencian Community, Spain, also called Castillo del Papa Luna, is located in the highest area of the rock that dominates the city, reaching a height of 64 m above sea level.
Its perimeter is about 230 m and it has an average height of 20m.
The Templars built this Romanesque work on the remains of the old Arab fortress between 1294 and 1307.
Pedro Martínez de Luna and Pérez de Gotor who was named Pope by Avignon’s obedience with the name of Benedict XIII of Avignon, the so-called Pope Luna, made the castle his pontifical see in the long dispute over its legitimacy.

Peniscola the Old Town
The best and easyest way to discover the Old Town is to follow the routes signposted throughout the city.
You can discover unique sights such as the Porteta the which is the original gateway into the city from the sea, in the old port area.
The Portal Fosc the main entrance into the city until the 18th century, the Portal de Sant Pere Saint Peter’s Gate, an access point to the castle from the sea, complete with a landing stage.
El Bufador a natural tunnel in the rock on which the city stands, formed by the ebb and flow of the Mediterranean Sea, which continues to crash through on stormy days, and the Nuestra Senora de la Virgen de la Ermitana Church.
