El Medano, Cabezo windsurfing-Tenerife

El Medano and the Red Mountain, Tenerife

On the South Coast of the Island of Tenerife, you’ll find the beautiful, unspoilt seaside town of El Medano.
With a very Spanish, laid back feel, this is a must visit if you travel to the Island.
Join me, Ray Cordell, and my wife Lesley, as we wander around the resort, breathing in the atmosphere, enjoying the lovely sunshine and the fantastic sea air.
Further along the beach, we hang out with the surf dudes, their colourful flags, para kites, and wind surfers, just adding to the overall scenery.
We then make the climb to the summit of the Red Mountain, which overlooks the resort. From here you can see for miles, up to the summit of Mount Teide, and along the coast to the popular resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.
What can I say about this amazing place, go there and see for yourself, and soak up the magic, El Medano, Tenerife.

El Medano (Spanish, “The sand dune”) is a town in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, on the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands.

A place of strong winds, it has been the site for various windsurfing competitions and championships, though in recent years. El Medano is one of the world’s best windsurfing and kite surfing locations, with three different windsurfing spots, the Bay (flat/swell), the Harbour Wall (wavespot sideshore), and Cabezo Beach (wavespot onshore).

El Medano

The town is situated near the largest natural beaches of Tenerife, the Playa Grande and the Playa Tejita. Between the beaches is La Montaña Roja (“The Red Mountain”), a volcanic cone that is a protected natural reserve. It’s a great place to relax and wind down.

There is a large town square in front of the main beach, which holds many local fiestas, especially during the summer months and a spectacular annual public firework display across the bay.

Around this square are many bars and restaurants where you can take a coffee or eat Spanish tapas or sea food. El Medano is located just south of the Reina Sofia airport, located in the south of Tenerife.

This is a small coastal resort that has a more Spanish theme than most other resorts in the south of Tenerife, frequented, especially on weekends, by local people with their children, to enjoy bathing in the shallow seas. Parking can be a bit of a problem at weekends.

Hermano Pedro (1626–1667) spent some time in a little cave situated near the present-day town. The cave is now the site of a small shrine dedicated to the saint.
