Local JUMILLA GRAPE HARVEST

Jumilla is a famous wine producing area in Murcia Spain. A great tourist attraction between September and October Very famous for the wine Monastrell

Monastrell-Wine-Grape

There are almost as many varieties of grapes as there are varieties of wine. In the Jumilla area the dominant grape is known as Monastrell.

This hardy black grape is ideally suited to the somewhat demanding conditions of very hot summers and short but severe cold snaps in winter.

They thrive in the dry arid limey soil of this region producing a small but very sweet grape which is ideal for wine production.

This is definitely the time to visit a bodega which sits on the edge of the small town of Jumilla which gives it’s name to the wines of this area. Driving through the Murcian countryside you are struck by the sheer volume of vineyards which line the roadside.

In the fields you can see the tractors and trailers making their way through the fields harvesting the grapes. At the Bodega, these same tractors, or in some cases lorries unload the grapes into the crushers. Amazingly nothing is wasted, with the leaves, pips and skins being separated from the juice and then go on to provide fertilizer for next years crop.
