Nearly all the caves in the Murcia Region are formed by limestone or dolomite, which results in the large number of cavities catalogued.

The longest-stretching cave is the Cueva del Puerto, in Calasparra, in which some 5 kilometres have been mapped.

Some of the caverns are open for guided tours; the rest can be explored by groups of cavers accompanied by guides.

Caves Murcia

El Cabezo Gordo has been declared a Protected Landscape since 1998.

It is also a Wildlife Protection Area due to its great biotic, landscape, paleontological and cultural interest.

This mountain of 312 meters of altitude is not of volcanic origin, like the other elevations of the Mar Menor, the rocks that form the Cabezo Gordo are of limestone origin, although others of metamorphic type are present such as the well-known marble “Piedra del Cabezo” .

In 1991 the paleoanthropological site “SIMA DE LAS PALOMAS” was discovered, where remains of animal bones, lithic industry, human bones and teeth of individuals (adults, children and babies) of the extinct species of the European fossil man named Neanderthal man, who lived here about 50,000 years ago.

Cave of Water, former mine exploited at the end of the XIX century beginning of the XX. In its interior there is a lake of fresh water, which is reached through a corridor in which it is necessary to use a flashlight and appropriate and comfortable clothing. It is also habitat of 5 different species of bats.

Rooms

It has many beautiful rooms such as the Zona del Laberinto, Gran Diaclasa, Gran Bloque and Sala de los Claustros.

Formations such as colourful stalagmites and flowstones stand out. But the truly surprising parts are the shapes with large holes sculpted by water. The visit is suitable for everyone.

Caving is also possible, with a perfect route for people who love extreme experiences. The route is covered in small groups and reaches the deepest part of the cave: Gran Diaclasa, 114 metres deep

Caves – Hidden charm

All in all, the cave is 14km long, of which some 400m are open to visitors with lighting and sound in several rooms. Suitable for school trips, expert speleologists and beginners alike.

Destapada

As far as vertical drop is concerned, the Region’s deepest cave is the Destapada, in Isla Plana (Mazarrón), which goes down 230 m.

Others of note are the Torreta (-175 m), in the Revolcadores massif; the Buitre (-106 m), in the massif of the same name (Caravaca); the Talayón (-152 m), in Lorca; and the Caneja, near Barranda, which is 220 metres long and 99 deep.

The Region of Murcia also offers a host of options for caving enthusiasts. In the interior of its many caves and chasms there are interesting examples of pre-historic rock art.

The Cueva del Puerto cave in Calasparra, the Sima Destapada chasm in Isla Plana or the La Cueva de La Serreta cave in Cieza, are just some of the Region of Murcia’s underground treasures.

Caves can be found both on the coast and in the interior and offer a variety of difficulty ratings so that novices and experienced speleologists alike can discover the interior of some of the region’s different catalogued caves.
